Urinary Incontinence in Women

Urinary Incontinence in WomenIn the U.S. it is estimated that at least 10 million women suffer from distressing urinary incontinence. The Asian Society of Female Urology puts the incidence of urinary incontinence in India at 12 per cent.

If incontinence is so prevalent then why isn’t anybody talking about it? Studies tell us that 58 per cent of women perceived urine loss as a normal consequence of aging and that less than 40 per cent will actually talk to their physician about it. Incontinence is an even more hidden topic than menopause.

Millions suffer in silence and embarrassment. Urinary incontinence often takes over the patient’s life limiting social activity and even work. It threatens self-confidence and self-esteem, inhibits sexual activity and exercise, and can even affect the way people dress. Continue reading

Treating Keloids

What are Keloids?

Keloids are a result of excessive formation of scar tissue at the site of injury. Although they usually occur after an injury, they are known to occur spontaneously in some patients as well. Keloids tend to occur more commonly at the site where skin overlies hard bony surfaces, most common site being the chest. Keloids are more common in dark individuals, especially the Africans. Keloids differ from hypertrophic scars which are limited to the site of the injury whereas keloids grow beyond the injury site with claw-like extensions. They are darker in color and tend to have symptoms like pain and itching. Continue reading

  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Chronic sinusitis

Anorexia Nervosa-Your ‘Slim’ Chance of Overcoming it.

Anorexia NervosaWhat is Anorexia Nervosa?

Anorexia is the decreased sensation of appetite (derived from the Greek for ‘absence of appetite’). Many possible causes exist for a decreased appetite, some of which are harmless and some of which come with severe complications. In common language, the terms anorexia and anorexia nervosa are often used interchangeably; however Anorexia Nervosa is a condition in which appetite is unaffected but the patient starves willingly and out of fear.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterized by excessive food restriction and irrational fear of gaining weight. It typically involves excessive weight loss and starvation. Weight is usually 15% below the person’s normal body weight for corresponding age and height. Anorexia usually begins in young people (usually girls) around mid to late adolescence. Continue reading

Prolapsed Disc

 What is a prolapsed disc?
Prolapsed Disc
When you have a prolapsed disc (commonly called a ‘slipped disc’), a disc does not actually ‘slip’. What happens is that, a part of the inner softer part of the disc (the nucleus pulposus) bulges out (herniates) through a weakness in the outer part of the disc. A prolapsed disc is sometimes called a herniated disc. The bulging disc may press on nearby structures such as a nerve coming from the spinal cord. Some inflammation also develops around the prolapsed part of the disc.

Any disc in the spine can prolapse. However, most prolapsed discs occur in the lumbar part of the spine (lower back). The size of the prolapse can vary. As a rule, the larger the prolapse, the more severe the symptoms are likely to be.

How heat ‘eats’ you up!

Scorching Heat Humans are warm-blooded beings. This means that we have the capacity to regulate our body temperature in optimum levels (i.e. 97F/36.1C to 99F/37.2C) irrespective of the temperature of our surroundings. This function is known as thermoregulation and is carried out by a specialized part of our brain, the preoptic area of the anterior hypothalamus. The preoptic area receives stimuli from various thermoreceptors situated in the skin, mucous membranes and from the hypothalamus itself and responds accordingly by propagating stimuli to either the heat-losing or the heat-promoting centers of the hypothalamus.

Heat stress is the amount of heat that must be dissipated by the body in order to remain in a thermal equilibrium. Heat stress is determined by metabolic rate of the individual and temperature and humidity of the surroundings. The amount of heat gained by the body should equal the amount of heat lost from it. Failed thermoregulation occurs when the body produces or absorbs more heat than it can dissipate leading to elevated body temperatures. It is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment to prevent disability or death. Continue reading
